支倉常長は、江戸時代初期に仙台藩主・伊達政宗に仕えた戦国武将であり、ヨーロッパとの交易を目指した政宗の使者とし

てキューバに派遣されました。彼は日本人として初めてキューバに足を踏み入れ、その誠実で礼儀正しい人柄から「誠の人」

や「完璧な日本大使」として高く評価され、当時のキューバの人々から大きな信頼を得ました。今日、彼の功績を称えて、

ハバナにはキューバと日本の友好のシンボルとして支倉の銅像が建てられています

Hasekura Tsunenaga was a samurai who served under the Sendai domain’s lord, Date Masamune, during the early

Edo period. As Masamune’s envoy, seeking trade with Europe, Hasekura became the first Japanese person to set

foot in Cuba. Known for his sincerity and impeccable manners, he was highly regarded as a “man of integrity” and

“the perfect Japanese ambassador,” earning the deep trust of the people in Cuba. In recognition of his

achievements, a statue of Hasekura stands in Havana today as a symbol of friendship between Japan and Cuba.
